The woodwork is called intarsia.... a 14th century Italian technique (and possibly tracing back to Tarsis in ancient Anatolia) that I picked up from a magazine article. (no, I'm not that old :p) It's made like a puzzle and then glued down on thin plywood.

check out my friends ~FrogPond and ~tarsici for some more great examples of this art/craft.
